Jack Wilson's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training Alaska Marathon PledgePage

QUICK UPDATE SUMMARY (See Diary for More Details):

- MY RUN: I finished! OK, so besides that, my time was 4:00.34 officially...including taking time to take 20 or so pictures. That's me to the right at the finish line! Also, I was the largest fundraiser in Michigan (out of 33). And I also had a great time vacationing as well. More details in the diary entries for 6/22 & 6/23/02!

- MY FUNDING: $6576 in donations, this includes my $500 which matches my largest contributor's donation. Goal of $4500 was met after six weeks of fundraising on 5/1/02! 79 out of approximately 107 people contacted contributed, a 74% response rate; only 10 of these 79 don't have email addresses. Donation's ranged from $10 to a high of $500 (2 other individuals besides myself) and the average is $84. The most common donation was $100 (22 times!). Thanks to all my contributors for their generosity!

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society presents an incentive long sleeve fleece to those runners whose fundraising exceeds their target by over $1000. I received one of these fleeces and have decided to give this fleece to my largest individual contributor as a small token of my appreciation. A picture of the fleece is included in the photo section.

- MY TRAINING: I ran a peak of 51 miles in a week at the height of my training with a total of approximately 535 miles of running preparation all told, including the final marathon amount of 26.2. This was from the period of 3/21/02 to 6/22/02, totalling almost 85 hours in all.

- MY TIME: In addition to the hours I spent running, I spent another 100 or so hours fundraising. This includes setting up the web site, phone calls, emails (roughly 320), filing checks and record keeping, thank you notes, etc. Since the cost of the trip to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is ~$1100, and I've donated $500 (which doesn't include postage, phone call charges, "surprise" post cards from Anchorage to my contributors, etc.), my 185 hours equates to $3.24/hour if I were to be paid to raise the funds for the balance cost ($600) of the trip...this would be below minimum wage (but better than what I'm making now!).

- MY VACATION: I extending my stay (at my own cost) in Anchorage by 2 days for sight seeing. My pictures of the Matanuska Glacier, Kenai Fjords area and a tour of Denali (with a stay in a $49/night "rustic" log cabin)are included in the photo section "Alaska Tourism".

- IN MEMORY OR HONOR OF: I had 11 people listed below that I have been keeping in mind during my training; several others have been mentioned by contributors but some of those affected prefer to remain anonymous.

- MY PUBLICITY: Plymouth Observer Newspaper Puts Jack's Mug on Page 3 (of 4/28/02 Edition)! See 4/29/02 Diary Entry! Special thanks to Brad Kadrich of the Observer for the nice article!

- MY MISSION:

My mission was to raise $4500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and also to complete my first full marathon run. Both missions were accomplished.

- MY INITIAL "PITCH":

Yes, I finally decide to do it…I’m going to run my first marathon. And not just any marathon. The Anchorage Alaska Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon on June 22nd, 2002, and I’m doing it for a charitable cause, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The mission and goals of this society are listed below along with a web link for more details.

The way this marathon works is I have to raise $4500 in the Society’s name and then they pay for my training (see the Team in Training information and web link below also), my flight and my hotel for the run. If I don’t raise the money, it fully comes out of my pocket; there is no turning back after April 4th (the first $1500 installment was due then). Although my job is to train to be able to do the marathon and to solicit funding for the society, I will also be making a donation to the society since obviously I’ll get to see some nice scenery while running too (as of the April 4th date, my financial contribution is $243).

If you are like me, December rolls along and I make my decisions on which charities to donate to. If so, will you consider moving your decision time frame up and consider donating to this cause on my behalf?

If so, please decide on a donation amount and make out a check to “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society” and deliver it to me for consolidation and tracking towards my goal. Please see the "donate" page for more information. And be sure to remember me when your own little ones have their candy sales, etc.!

And if you have or know someone who has had one of these diseases, I would be happy to run on their behalf or in memory of them. I’ll make a determination on how to do this once I find out how many people make this request (running with their names on my jersey or hat or something like this). This memorial is for those who are still fighting the deseases, those who are cured and unfortunately, for those who are no longer with us.

The Society was established in 1949 as the de Villiers Foundation. In 2000, the Society changed its name from The Leukemia Society of America to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to emphasize its commitment to fighting all blood-related cancers.

Mission and Goals
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. More than 76 percent of our expenditures is directed to research and patient services. The Society has dedicated itself to being one of the top-rated voluntary health agencies in terms of dollars that directly fund our mission.

Strategic Goals:
Research - Accelerate the acquisition and application of scientific understanding, to advance the treatment, diagnosis, or prevention of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and myeloma.

Patient Services - Reach all patients at the time of diagnosis and make a significant difference in the lives of all who choose to receive the Society's services.

Advocacy - Increase influence with private and public organizations to achieve the Society's strategic outcomes.

Revenue Generation - Maximize the revenue we raise in the near term while, at the same time, developing capabilities for revenue growth that extend over a longer time period.

Public Awareness - Increase awareness of the Society among the general public and core constituents in order to increase support for our mission and reach more people with the services we provide.

Human Resources - Become the non-profit agency of choice for staff and volunteers.

It should be noted that this Society supports research at several cancer centers in Michigan, including U of M, Children’s Hospital, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State. More info is available at:

About the Team in Training fund raising events:
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training® (TNT) is the world's largest endurance sports training program. TNT provides me with the coaching, training and even the travel opportunities to make my athletic goals (my 1st marathon!) a reality. What's the deal? In exchange for the training and support, I try to raise money toward a cure for leukemia, one of the leading disease killers of children; lymphoma, the leading disease killer of men and women under 35; and other blood-related cancers. More information on how this works, and details of my event are included at the following site:
